Colobus angolensis palliatus |
|
Angolan colobus monkey
The youngs of this monkey are born snow-white and not before four months they begin to become black. It is interesting that the three-fold stomach of colobus monkey contains microbes dissociating cellulose and thus enables for these monkeys to gain two-fold quantity of nutritive matter from food composed mostly of leaves, than other species of monkeys are able to obtain. However, this monkey itself becomes a prey of chimpanzees and it keeps clear baboons too. Since ancient time the native leaders decorated themselves by leather of these animals, produced head coverings of it and coated their shields and up today people are their main enemy. A sub-species of Angolan colobus monkey kept in pilsner ZOO is bred by a few of zoological gardens in the world only. As there is a surplus of males in Czech republic, we keep here a male group except for the breeding pair.
