1. 1. 2004 - Annimals in 2003
Cold-blooded animals
(Invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles) In 2003 we started to realize new project of regular exhibitions with separate animal groups. Most of our animals came from our background but we wanted to present their variety,so we also asked private breeders for help. They usually lent us very rare animals,so here I want to express my thanks to them.Whip spiders were presented in the first exhibited group. We were successful and could assemble 60 species. After whip spiders there were shown beetles, then walkingsticks together with cockroaches,in summer amphibians were presented and exhibition of snakes started in September. In November we were able to open exhibition of scorpions and last month of the year was reserved for whip spiders again, because their attendance won easily and their keeping is easy. After a year balance I can say that our exhibitions are visited as by layman as by experienced breeders. Sklípkan Magazine Sklípkan is destined for breeders of invertebrates,it has changed and it is edited in English.Last year was new version of the magazine tested and it seems that foreign breeders are interested in it.We have already begun to receive quality articles for edition,we will also offer them to Czech breeders. We would like to contribute to a better cooperation among ZOOs and private breeders, those reach much better rearing successes. Interesting arrivals The biggest growth was noticed at reptiles, they increased by 33 new taxons.Among the most interesting animals there are rare bred Draco lineatus,Hydrosaurus amboinensis,Tropidophorus apulus,Elaphe janseni,Elaphe flavolineata and others (look at the list). Two new taxons have appeared at amphibians. Stagnation was noticed at fresh water fish,we lost 25 taxons, this situation was caused by absence of exhibit space. There was built new tank for salt-water fish and invertebrates in the Zoo. Breeding On the top I would place our breeding of the toad Melanophryniscus stelzeri and Phyllomedusa hypochondrialis. Tortoises Geochelone sulcata are reared regulary,we had over 70 youngs. For the first time the rearing of Geochelone pardalis,Testudo marginata and Testudo hermanni was successful.Youngs were also born from both pairs of Osteolaemus tetraspis. Big mammals in 2003 Last year was doubtless successful in the newage history.Several new taxons came into our exhibits, some of them have appeared for the first time here.Probably the most interesting event, happened in our Zoo,was the successful rearing of the Chimpanzee female(Pan troglodytes).Another success was achieved at our new bred pair of Black-and-white colobus(Colobus angolensis palliatus),a young male was born.Four youngs were born from our Common marmoset(Callithrix jacchus),unfortunately one of them died during the year. Our pair of Red-handed tamarin(Saquinus midas) repeated their excelent reproduction abilities, three youngs were born again. Two youngs were reared from Pygmy marmoset(Callithrix pygmaea). Thanks to the exchange of male reproductor in our herd of Blackbucks(Antilope cervicapra) there were born nearly 20 youngs.A few youngs were born from Chinese muntjac(Muntiacus reevesi). For the second time in our history a young one from Chilean pudu(Pudu puda) was born.We mustn’t forget the birth of Himalayan goral(Nemorhaedus goral arnouxianus) and Tule elk(Cervus elaphus nannodes). The first breading has appeared at red kangaroo(Macropus rufus).Successful was the reproduction at Brown-nosed coati(Nasua nasua) and Grey wolf(Canis lupus). 10 years old male of Amur tiger(Panthera tigris altaica) has arrived in the end of the year,he was acquired in the loan from Zoo Olomouc. Chinese leopard male was imported from Zoo Cottbus as apartner for our female.New arrival is Leopard cat(Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura).Collection of African animals was expanded on Somali sheep and West African dwarf sheep. Herd of seven Kafue Flats lechwe(Kobus leche kafuensis) was placed in the African part of the Zoo together with African cattle Watussi(Bos primigenius f. taurus). We acquired interesting Douroucouli(Aotus azarai boliviensis) and bred pair of Ring-tailed lemur(Lemur catta). We also exchanged reproductive males from Lion-tailed macaque(Macaca silenus),Bactrian camel(Camelus bactrianus) and Common eland(Taurotragus oryx). |
